Believing in a Devil

The Gaboon Viper1 is an ambush predator. It dwells in the rain forests of West Africa and has the highest venom yield of any snake, meaning that a bite is always a medical emergency. Because of its camouflaged scales most human bites occur when the snake is stepped on by unwitting walkers who had no idea there was a viper nearby. This is an example of the necessity of being aware of hidden danger.

2 Nephi 28:222 And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none–and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.

The story that includes spiritual enemies whose hidden venom causes the destruction of our souls is fundamentally different than the one that does not, and causes us to create a different reality. We will be more alert and protective of our spiritual well-being, because we recognize that there are things that damage our spirits and intelligent beings who covertly seek to weaponize those things against us.
